SWAP provides independent advice to adults about opportunities to access higher education in Scotland. There are many adults who have the potential to succeed at university, but who missed out first time round for a variety of reasons. If you have always wanted to study at university and are ready to return to education, we can help consider your options.
Is SWAP for me?
Is SWAP for me?
Often people believe that university won't ever be an option for then because they don't have the necessary qualifications from school. You may worry that you are too old or think that university if not for people like you. Even if no-one in your family or from your community has gone to university, that doesn't mean that university is not for you. What you may not realise is that you will have built up a range of skills through previous work experience, or from bringing up a family, and these may be skills that universities are looking for (e.g. being able to communicate effectively with others, work in teams and solve problems). A Scottish Wider Access Programme develops these skills and prepares you to succeed in higher education. To be eligible as a SWAP student, you must have been out of full-time education for at least 3 years (or 5 years if you have an NC or Highers)
I'm probably too old.
You are never too old to learn. Even if you have been at work (or out of work) for years, or lack formal qualifications, there is still a route into higher education. SWAP programmes run in colleges all over Scotland. They are designed specifically for adults and can lead to a wide range of university and college opportunities.
Thousands of people have succeeded!
Since SWAP began in 1989 over 30,000 adults have successfully returned to study via one of our access programmes. SWAP programmes are designed specifically for adult returners and dedicated college staff are there to support your progress, and give advice on taking the next step.
