Michael - Access to Science & Technology - Degree In Metallurgy - Chemistry lecturer

"I left school at sixteen and started work in a local office as a clerk. I began to feel frustrated in my job and felt I could have done better at school. I saw a leaflet in my local Community centre and telephoned to get more information.

Soon after, I started at my local College on the SWAP Access to Science & Technology Programme. I really enjoyed the course. To my relief, it was not like going back to school. I was studying with other adults who were just like me. After successfully completing the programme, I went on to the University to study for a degree in science. I graduated with a Second Class Honours Degree in Metallurgy and then went on to take my Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education (Chemistry).

Science teachers are in great demand so I had no trouble finding a job at a secondary school straight away. Later on, I was given the opportunity to lecture at my local College in Chemistry and this has turned out to be the ideal job for me. Not only do I now lecture but I also help with students who require extra assistance. I bring a lot of my own personal experiences to the job. I believe I am a better teacher as I am able to empathise with my students."
