Welcome to our Preparation for Higher Education (PHE) section for students currently studying SWAPWest programmes. Prep for HE is an integral part of the SWAP programme and its completion ensures you will develop yourself to become a successful student when you progress.
Follow your college tutor's instructions on when to complete each module. There is a lot of learning packed into each module, so take your time and really think about the information, advice and guidance offered, and how you can apply it to your own academic practice.
Prep for HE materials are available for all SWAP students year-round, even after you have progressed to the next level of study, so please feel free to return to these modules as needed. As your studies progress, you may find yourself coming back to reconsider various tips and techniques suggested by the universities and former SWAP students.
The easiest way to keep up with your PHE modules is to save your reflections in a folder online, in your email, or on your device.
If you prefer a paper copy, you can download and print out a physical copy of the checklist to keep track of PHE all year long.
Welcome to SWAP! This induction module has been designed to introduce you to SWAP and help you prepare for the year ahead. You will find the link to register with SWAP in this module.

This module provides an opportunity to practise critical self-reflection, which is an essential skill for all academic disciplines. We'll take a look at the personal qualities of adaptability and resilience, and how developing a growth mindset can help you cope well with the substantial changes that come along with a return to formal education.
This is the first deep dive into the academic skills modules you'll have this year. It's a substantial piece of work, but don't worry! You don't have to do it all at once. It's absolutely fine to take breaks or even to do one small section a day over the course of a whole week.
Good time-management skills, which can be improved with effort, will help you minimise stress. This module offers some suggestions to help you develop and maintain a healthy balance so you can achieve your academic goals without neglecting your health and wellbeing.
This module builds upon the information provided in PHE04: Research and Referencing (Part 1). It contains information adapted from materials developed by the University of Glasgow, which will provide you with more information about academic research and referencing, to help you master these essential skills
In this module, you'll be asked to consider the importance of regular reflection in your academic practice, including the quality of your study environment and the learning strategies that work best for you.
This is the first of three modules that aim to boost your writing skills and prepare you for the level of writing that will be expected next year. It is a substantial bit of work that will require at least two hours to complete, but you don't have to do it all in one go. It's perfectly fine to read one section per day over several days. Take your time and make the effort to absorb the information so you can apply it to your future assessments.
In earlier modules, we focused on developing a positive mindset, achieving a healthy work-life-study balance, and engaging in valuable reflection on academic working practices. In this module, we'll take a look at another essential ingredient for academic success: support.
We release new Prep for HE links throughout the year. Your class tutor will support you in completing these modules in good time. The final module you'll complete before the mid-winter break is PHE10: UCAS Application and Personal Statement Guide, which will be released in October (but not due to be completed until early December). The second half of Prep for HE (modules 11-20) will be released in the new year.
